as-howarth asked:

Hey John, what is your reaction to the news that the Riverside district has chosen to ban TFIOS from middle school libraries on the grounds that it deals with mortality and sex? I remember your reactions to similar situations concerning your books have been pretty animated and wondered what you thought?

fishingboatproceeds answered:

I guess I am both happy and sad.

I am happy because apparently young people in Riverside, California will never witness or experience mortality since they won’t be reading my book, which is great for them.

But I am also sad because I was really hoping I would be able to introduce the idea that human beings die to the children of Riverside, California and thereby crush their dreams of immortality.

Imagine a world where people only die if they know about death.

(How quickly) would everyone become immortal? What do you think will happen? Will there come a point wherein everyone hides the the concept of death from a generation and the concept will die out? Can you even do that? You can’t teach any form of history, or even family trees, because every previous generation has died (what about pets and other animals? is it only human mortality that counts?). Infant mortality would drop to zero though.

If people only can die if they know death exist, would anything change at all?

And so a novel was born.

dont-just-go-pink:

This October, thousands of people are going to be wearing pink shirts, ribbons, bracelets, headbands, etc. for Breast Cancer Awareness. However, October isn’t just Breast Cancer Awareness Month! October is the month to spread awareness for:
AIDS
Spina Bifida
Down Syndrome
Celiac Disease
Selective Mutism
Bullying Prevention
Breast Cancer Awareness
Rett Syndrome
Lupus
Domestic Violence
Unfortunately, many of these awarenesses are overshadowed by the commercialism of Breast Cancer Awareness. While awarenesses shouldn’t be competitive, I am here to remind everyone that other awarenesses exist and should be supported!
Don’t just go pink!

Signal boost!
SIGNAL BOOST!
SIGNAL BOOST!
We can spread the word!
We can raise awareness for awarenesses!
WE CAN DO THIS!

While it’s not month long, the first week of October is also Trichotillomania/Dermatillomania awareness week! Its aim is to raise awareness for sufferers of Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRB). It also has an awareness ribbon, and there’s more information about the week here too! (Unfortunately, the link is for last year’s BFRB week, though it’s set to take place this year too)

Ah, if I can jump in here, the end of October this year is also the beginning of Asexual Awareness Week (Oct. 26–Nov. 1)! It’s not a disease or a problem like many of the other things on this list, but I thought I’d mention it, if that’s all right!
As far as I know we don’t have a ribbon, though there’s plenty of ace merchandise for allies and aces, and an ace flag as well!
(Sorry if this isn’t appropriate to add: I definitely don’t want to take away from the other very good causes on this post by any means!)

No you may certainly not jump in with another awareness! And marianope, what makes you think that you can add your awareness!?
Kidding, obviously!
The whole point of this campaign is to raise awareness for the awarenesses! I listed ten that I could find but seriously, if you know of any other awarenesses in October, please add them!
